There are two very different ways to experience Mount Everest in Nepal: a one-hour mountain flight from Kathmandu, or the classic Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. Here is how to choose.

Time

The mountain flight takes about one hour, start to finish, on a single morning. The EBC trek takes 12 to 14 days round-trip. If your Nepal trip is short, the flight is the only realistic way to see Everest.

Cost

A mountain flight is around USD 280 per person and includes airport taxes and a guaranteed window seat. The EBC trek costs far more once you add permits, guides, porters, teahouses and the Lukla flight  and takes two weeks of your time.

Fitness and altitude

The flight requires no fitness at all and stays in a comfortable, pressurised cabin ideal for families, seniors and anyone worried about altitude sickness. The trek demands good fitness and careful acclimatisation to nearly 5,400 m.

The views

The trek rewards you with immersive, on-the-ground scenery over many days. The flight gives you a sweeping aerial panorama of the entire Everest range Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and Ama Dablam in a single, unforgettable hour.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose the mountain flight if you are short on time, travelling with family, or want a guaranteed Everest view without the physical challenge.
  • Choose the trek if you have two weeks, are fit, and want the full Himalayan journey.
  • Do both if you can many trekkers take the flight first as a preview of the peaks they will later walk beneath.
